May 3, 2016... Transit Of Mercury...
Members of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada, NB Centre will be at the Irving Nature Park in Saint John for this daytime observing event. If you get a chance, join us for a rare view of Mercury as it crosses the face of the sun. The planet begins its transit shortly after 8:00 AM and ends shortly before 4:00 PM.

May 2, 2016... Coming Soon...Astronomy Week...
Join us Saturday, May 14, 2016 from 9:00 PM to 11:00 PM at the Rockwood Park Bark Park (Fisher Lakes entrance, 600 metres from the gate) in Saint John to celebrate International Astronomy Day with members of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada and the Saint John Astronomy Club! Several telescopes will be set up for observing the treasures of the night sky. See the Moon at its best; Jupiter with its cloud belts, a giant storm called the Great Red Spot, and 4 moons (one of which will disappear behind the planet soon after 9 pm). As darkness sets in we will see star clusters, galaxies millions of light years away, and an interstellar cloud where stars are forming called the Orion nebula. Later we might glimpse the ice caps of Mars and the rings and Saturn. The astronomers will be happy to point out the constellations and answer your questions about their telescopes and the night sky.

During the day there will also be a Getting Acquainted with the Night Sky workshop that will introduce you to the wonders of the sky and how to observe them at the Rockwood Park Interpretation Centre from 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM. Seating is limited and as a result please register with Curt Nason (nasonc@nbnet.nb.ca) via email.

Also, in Fredericton, at the Brookside Mall (Southside entrance near the RBC bank) in celebration of International Astronomy Week and weather permitting there will be Solar Observing sessions in the daytime from 8:00am to 4:00pm and Night Sky Observing sessions from 9:00pm to Midnight. Note: Of special importance is the Transit of Mercury across the Face of the May 9. On Saturday May 14, there will be an Astronomy display inside the Brookside Mall (near entrance beside the RBC bank) from approximately 9:00am to 6:00pm. There will be a few telescopes on display as well as some free astronomy literature (Starfinders, Getting Started In Astronomy Brochures, Moon Gazer Guides etc). There will also be a Telescope clinic for anyone that owns a telescope but are unsure how to use it. Bring your telescope to the clinic and let experienced Amateur Astronomers show you how to properly set up and use your telescope. For more info contact Adrien Bordage (abordage@rogers.com)
